This poem was written in 1970 during my junior year in college, when I was literally living in a basement apartment. In 2001, I made a small change or two and reused this poem in a young adult novel, Things Not Seen. In that story, the poem is created by a blind girl. All of which proves that no thoughtful writing ever goes to waste.

I wrote this in 1969. The idea grew from a painting and poem called The Blessed Damozel, painted and written by Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
